Vienna, 80 years on: songs at the Monument to the Heroes of the Red Army

Exactly 80 years ago, on 13 April 1945, the Red Army liberated Vienna from Nazi occupation. Victory came from the East at an enormous cost: more than 18,000 Soviet soldiers fell in the battles for the Austrian capital.

On 13 April 2025, on Schwarzenbergplatz at the Monument to the Heroes of the Red Army, they were remembered and thanked — with song.

A concert that brought generations and cities together

The festive open-air concert was organised by activists of the Immortal Regiment movement in Austria together with participants of a traditional choir festival. Groups from three countries performed on the steps of the monument: an ensemble from Prague, a folk group from Vienna and a Don Cossack song and dance ensemble from Augsburg.

The concert took place on an open public square in the centre of Vienna, accessible to everyone.

Living memory

It was not just a concert. It was living memory, resounding in voices, songs and traditions.
